About NEAR Protocol
NEAR is a layer 1 whose distinguishing feature is Nightshade, a sharding design that splits each block across shards so throughput grows with validator count rather than being fixed. Accounts are named rather than hexadecimal, which removes a whole category of user error. Issuance is a flat 5% a year, most of it to validators, while the large majority of transaction fees are burned β so net inflation depends on how busy the chain is.
NEAR transactions cost a fraction of a cent, and contracts can pay gas on the user's behalf, so many NEAR apps feel free to use.
NEAR has traded as an AI-adjacent layer 1 as much as a general-purpose one, which has made it unusually sensitive to that narrative.

No fixed cap is published for NEAR Protocol, which is why no maximum is shown on this page β we leave the figure out rather than invent a denominator. Circulating supply was 1.3 billion NEAR as of 5 August 2026. Without a cap, the number that matters is the net issuance rate: new supply minus anything burned, as a percentage per year.
